Managing Snow Melt and Drainage on Low-Slope Commercial Roofs
Introducing HeatDefender® DrainMelt™ Kit for Commercial Drainage Applications
When snow and ice accumulate on a low-slope roof, the biggest challenge faced by contractors and architects is how to effectively manage snow melt. Unlike steep-sloped roofing systems, low-slope roofs don’t naturally shed debris. Instead, they rely on rooftop heating and drainage systems to melt snow and remove water. But what happens when drains and scuppers freeze over or get clogged with ice? Water pools quickly, adding weight to roofing structures, deteriorating roofing materials, and creating weak points at risk for leaks.
That’s why we’ve expanded our HeatDefender product line with a new solution engineered to support drainage in low-slope roofing applications. Designed specifically for commercial membrane roofing systems like TPO, EPDM, and PVC, our new HeatDefender® DrainMelt™ Kit is designed to keep critical drainage pathways open, preventing long-term damage and costly building repairs.
Why Low-Slope Roofs Are Especially Vulnerable to Ice Clogs
Large low-slope commercial roofs are engineered around drainage. Internal roof drains, gutters, and scuppers are responsible for safely channeling water away from the building. But, during Spring freeze-thaw cycles, those drainage points become prime locations for ice formation.
Snow melts during daytime temperature spikes and water flows toward drains and scuppers. Overnight, temperatures drop causing water to refreeze around the drainage openings. Over time, layers of ice build up and eventually block the system entirely leaving meltwater with nowhere to go. Protecting continuous drainage channels is essential to prevent standing water from:
- Adding weight and stress to the roofing structure
- Deteriorating roofing materials and creating leaks
- Seeping into insulation, or damaging building systems
Engineered Specifically for Low-Slope Roof Drainage
Traditional exposed heat cable systems often struggle in harsh winter environments because much of the heat they generate dissipates before it can melt snow. The original HeatDefender® changes that equation with a proprietary aluminum casing that acts as a thermal radiator, distributing heat across a larger surface area and maintaining reliable meltwater channels.
Now, we’ve taken our HeatDefender® line a step further with a new system specifically designed to address the unique drainage challenges builders experience working with low-slope roofs.
The system uses radial layouts that channel heat directly into drains and scuppers. For drains, HeatDefender® DrainMelt™ Kit uses a spoke-style configuration that surrounds drain openings, maintaining a clear melt path and preventing freeze-over conditions.
Kit configurations are available based on drain size:
- HeatDefender Drain 10 for 8–10” drains
- HeatDefender Drain 16 for 12–16” drains
- HeatDefender Drain 18 for 18”+ drains
For scupper applications, the system transitions into a fan-shaped layout that directs heat toward the wall opening and drainage exit point. At least one cable run extends through the scupper opening itself to maintain uninterrupted water flow. The result is a cleaner, more efficient, and more reliable de-icing solution for commercial roofing systems.
Built for Performance in Extreme Conditions
HeatDefender® DrainMelt™ Kit underwent simulated extreme winter testing with temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F) and sustained snowfall conditions. Testing demonstrated that traditional exposed cable systems lose significant thermal energy to surrounding air, while HeatDefender’s aluminum extrusion distributes heat more effectively across the roof surface. The testing also validated low-slope drain and scupper layouts for effective performance in snow and ice-melt conditions.
In addition to improving thermal efficiency, the aluminum housing protects self-regulating heat trace cable from environmental exposure, helping extend cable lifespan and system reliability. HeatDefender® is compatible with major self-regulating cable manufacturers including Raychem®, Chromalox®, and Thermon®.
Smarter Drainage Protection for Commercial Roofs
Unpredictable winter weather requires reliable tools to help maintain properties. In extreme conditions, drainage protection must go beyond traditional exposed heat cable layouts, to ensure effective water removal. HeatDefender® DrainMelt™ Kit provides a purpose-built solution designed to guard the most vulnerable points on commercial roofing systems.
By combining high-efficiency thermal transfer, engineered drainage layouts, and durable aluminum construction, HeatDefender® DrainMelt™ Kit helps maintain continuous water flow when it matters most, ultimately reducing the risk of ponding, ice dams, and costly winter damage.
