DaVinci Roofscapes offer the stunning aesthetic of natural slate and hand-split shake with the modern durability of composite materials. However, because these engineered polymers are smoother and more "frictionless" than natural materials, they are highly prone to sudden, dangerous snow avalanches.
At Alpine SnowGuards, we’ve spent years performance-testing snow retention specifically on DaVinci tiles at our Vermont research facility. Here is what you need to know to keep your property safe.
Synthetic tiles are constructed from virgin resins and thermal stabilizers. This makes them incredibly durable but also "slippery." When temperatures rise even slightly, a meltwater layer forms between the tile and the snowpack, causing tons of snow to slide off all at once.
The Alpine Solution: We don’t just offer a one-size-fits-all guard. We have systems designed for the specific thicknesses and profiles of DaVinci’s Slate and Shake lines.
Developed specifically for modern composite tiles, the Fusion-Guard and Snow Bird feature increased height and optimum strength.
Ideal Pitch: Tested successfully on steep 12:12 pitches.
Key Advantage: Includes stiffening ribs for added rigidity and an 18” strap that tucks securely under the shingle, making it a secure and watertight solution.
Our research facility in Morrisville, VT (an 80 psf snow load zone) has revealed critical insights for composite roof owners:
The "Frost Bond" Factor: We’ve observed that frost formation on shingles prior to a snowfall actually increases friction, helping snow guards work more effectively.
Density Matters: For steep slopes (12:12), adding additional snow guards "upslope" closer to the peak increases the snow blanket’s ability to hold together, preventing it from "tearing" around the lower guards.
Follow the Layout: There have been zero reported failures of Alpine systems when our recommended layouts are followed.
While snow guards hold the snow in place, the "freeze-thaw" cycle on composite tiles can still lead to ice buildup at the eaves. To prevent gutter sagging and ice dams, we recommend pairing your snow guards with the HeatDefender system.
This integrated approach ensures that while the guards prevent the avalanche, the heating cables manage the meltwater, keeping your gutters clear all winter long.
Don't guess when it comes to safety. Use our data-backed tools to ensure your DaVinci roof is protected.
